A double-decker Megabus crashed into the concrete pillar of an overpass on Interstate 55 in Illinois Thursday, killing one woman and injuring dozens of other passengers, according to The Chicago Tribune.,0,7532269,full.story

It appears that the bus had a tire blowout and then hit the center pillar of the overpass, which was near Litchfield, Ill., some 60 miles from St. Louis. The accident took place at 1:20 p.m.

There were roughly 64 passengers on the bus, which had left from Chicago, The Tribune said. A University of Missouri graduate student, Aditi Avhad, 25, of India died in the accident, and about half of the double-decker’s other passengers were hurt.

About 30 ambulances and five medical helicopters came to the crash scene, where five passengers had to be extricated from the bus, including Avhad, according to The Tribune. At least 33 passengers were taken to area hospitals.

The bus driver had undergone surgery, and didn’t have life-threatening injuries, The Tribune reported.

The Megabus was on its way from Chicago to St. Louis, and it was then going on to Kansas City.

The bus company issued a statement in the wake of the crash.

“The thoughts and prayers of our entire staff go out to everyone involved, particularly the family of the person who has died,” the statement said.
