A passenger in a bus carrying special-needs people was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon in O’Fallon, Ill., according to the Belleville News Democrat.

The victim in the accident was Brian McCarty, a 54-year-old Belleville man, who died of cardiac arrest, authorities told the News Democrat. He was among four people on the bus operated by St. Clair Vocational Enterprises.

McCarty and one other passenger were clients of SAVE, a non-profit that helps those with developmental disabilities and challenges to find jobs, the News Democrat reported. In addition to the SAVE clients and the bus driver, there was a monitor on the bus.

The bus hit a tree on St. Andrews Drive shortly after 4 p.m., and the driver was injured badly enough to have to be airlifted to a hospital, the News Democrat reported. But authorities expected him to pull through. The monitor suffered minor injuries.
