In a horrific accident in a fantasy world, a 9-year-old boy died after being hit by a bus at Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort in Florida Thursday. http://www.wesh.com/entertainment/23026301/detail.html

Chase Brubaker of St. Petersburg, Fla., was riding his bike with a young girl on the sidewalk on Big Pine Drive. But then Brubaker apparently left the sidewalk and went into the road. He hit the side of a bus, was pulled underneath it and then was run over by the vehicle.

The boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was wearing a helmet. The girl was unharmed.

The man driving the bus, which picks up visitors along the Fort Wilderness Loop, was David Russel Rich, of Montverde, Fla. Police said a full investigation could take as long as two months.

“We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the boy’s family d loved ones for their loss,” a Disney spokeswoman said.

Two students and a parent were hurt Wednesday when a Pulaski school bus backed into a car in Green Valley, Wis.

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20100225/GPG0101/2250637/1207/GPG01/Update–Pulaski-bus-driver-off-job-after-2-students-hurt-in-crash

The school bus driver, a veteran driver for more than 30 years, was pulled off the job pending an investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The bus was backing out of a driveway when it hit a car on Hintz Road. That car’s passengers were a mother and her children, two students from Fairview Elementary School. The mother and one of the children were hurt, as one of the students on the bus. That bus passenger was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

More than 20 people on their way to a wedding were killed Wednesday when their bus fell into a river in India.

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/International/2010/02/17/Bus-crash-in-India-kills-22/UPI-18901266410484/

The accident took place in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state, and killed an estimated 21 or 22 people, according to several press reports. Another 30 people from the bus were hurt during the incident n the village of Maharajpura.

The bus fell into the Pujab River after using a makeshift bridge to cross the river because the regular bridge was having construction done. http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/02/17/india.bus/

Authorities were hunting for the bus’s driver, who fled from the scene of the accident.

This story is so reminiscent of the bus crash that opens the movie Dragonfly, with Kevin Costner. Such a horrible feeling to be in an out of control vehicle, falling off a cliff. Buses of course are far more dangerous in such a crash because the air bags and seat belts that protect against many serious injuries in automobiles don’t exist in buses. We pray that those who were hurt don’t get worse from brain injuries or other injuries that get lost in the shuffle of all of that tragedy.

South Carolina Weighs Texting Ban for School Bus Drivers

South Carolina is considering a bill that bans school bus drivers from texting while they’re behind the wheel. http://news.sc/2010/02/03/texting-ban-planned-for-south-carolina-school-bus-drivers/

The question must be asked: how could such a measure fail to pass? If there is any place that texting would violate all concepts of safety and public policy, it would have to be while driving school children in a bus.

Under the proposed legislation, school bus drivers would face up to a $100 fine if they were caught violating the texting prohibition.

If it passes the ban, South Carolina would be an addition to the 19 states and Washington, D.C., who have already barred texting while driving.

There has been considerable research on whether texting bans really lead to less accidents. A recent study by the Highway Loss Data Institute found the restrictions have no impact, while research by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute said that texting drivers are 23 times more at risk to have an accident or almost have an accident than those who are not distracted. Add a touch screen phone like the Iphone to that equation and the risk of a catastrophe has to grow exponentially.

Man Killed in Illinois Head-On Collision With School Bus

A man driving a pickup truck was killed Wednesday in a head-on crash with a school bus in the East Saint Louis area of Illinois.

The accident took place as snowy weather made roads slick. The man driving the truck, who wasn’t identified, was driving west on Douglas Road and crashed near Kraft Road, according to the Belleville News-Democrat of Belleville, Ill. For the full story, see http://www.bnd.com/179/story/1107676.html?storylink=omni_popular

There were no children on the bus. The bus driver was hurt and was brought to a local hospital for treatment.

St. Clair County sheriff’s officers blamed the accident on the driver going to fast and the inclement weather.

In any case involving a skidding accident, such as this one, an investigation should be made as to whether the tires of the vehicle which lost control, were improperly placed or rotated. If the vehicle had two new or newer tires on the front, instead of the back, then this would likely cause severe inability to control the vehicle after hydroplaning begins. The tires with the greater tread need to go on the back, not the front. See http://fishtail.tv

Car doesn’t slow before Mich. rail crossing

The power of a train, the tragedy of young people killed, now all on video. It is ironic how much of our law regarding the automobile and safety revolve around trains and teen age driver wrecks. Today, we can pause and remember and say a prayer for safety.

DETROIT (AP) — The car carrying five young people never slows as it approaches a rail crossing near Detroit, and drives right past a car that had been stopped there for several seconds — just before an Amtrak train rushes through the crossing.

Police released a copy of a surveillance video Friday that captured the crash a day earlier, in which the five people were killed after skirting the railroad gate about 20 miles west of Detroit. At the wheel, according to police and state records, was a 19-year-old man with a suspended license.

“There is no indication alcohol or anything else was involved other than bad judgment,” Canton Township police spokesman Sgt. Mark Gajeski said.

Dan Broughton of Woodhaven, a Detroit suburb, was driving, Gajeski said. State records show he had a number of traffic violations, including speeding and disobeying a stop sign in the Detroit enclave of Highland Park on Jan. 7. His failure to show a driver’s license April 1 in Woodhaven led a judge to suspend his license for one month — a suspension that began Wednesday.

Friends and family at Broughton’s home declined to comment to an Associated Press reporter on Friday.

Authorities released more information Friday on the victims and audio from a 911 report of the crash. Gajeski said he expected that the medical examiner’s office would run toxicology tests, which could take weeks, but police said there was no indication drugs played a factor.

Investigators said the crossing had a gate and flashing lights that were working when the car approached. Police said the train, which was carrying about 170 people, typically travels about 67 miles per hour at the site of the crash. It broadsided the black Ford Fusion and pushed it about a mile down the tracks.

Police said the train was traveling within the allowed speed limit.

“There is no one to be charged,” Gajeski said. “From witness statements and the video, the person just ran the gate.”

A day after the crash, memorials including a bouquet of white carnations were left at the crossing.

Canton Township police said the others killed were Sean Harris and Eddie Gross of Taylor and Terrence Harris of Stafford, Va. Family members say Sean was 19 and also lived in Detroit; Terrence was 21; and Gross was 17. The mother of 14-year-old Jessica Sadler said Thursday the girl was among those killed.

No one aboard the train was injured, Amtrak said.

Last year, 119 people died nationwide in Amtrak accidents, usually when trains struck vehicles or pedestrians at railroad crossings, according to figures from the Federal Railroad Administration. Eleven people died in train accidents of all types in Michigan in 2008, according to Federal Railroad Administration data.

Authorities: Tire failure may be behind Nev. crash

Foundation is important to any structure or piece of equipment. In a motor vehicle, that foundation is the tire. The below story raises the issue of tires. Too many accidents that do have a responsible wrongdoer, are written off as not actionable, because no one considered the responsibility of the seller or installer of the tires.

LAS VEGAS (AP) _ Tire failure may have caused a casino worker shuttle bus crash that injured 29 people, a Nevada Highway Patrol officer said Monday.

It’s still early in the investigation, but officers have found evidence of tread separation on the left front tire of the full-sized bus, Trooper Kevin Honea said.

Three people remained in critical condition Monday at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, including the driver, said spokeswoman Tammy McMahan.

Herbst Gaming Inc. president Ferenc Szony said there were 33 employees on the chartered bus when it crashed Sunday night on Interstate 15 about eight miles south of the Las Vegas Strip. The bus was shuttling the workers to Las Vegas from the state-line town of Primm.

Wheels and suspension components were ripped from the bus and strewn across the highway, he said.

A casino bus also was involved in an accident Sunday in Mississippi that killed three people and injured more than 30.

The bus belonging to Harrah’s Tunica was carrying 43 people when it overturned at an intersection in Tunica, authorities said. Rain was falling at the time but Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Leslie White would not speculate on the cause of the wreck.

In Texas, 17 people have died as a result of a wreck on Friday that involved a chartered bus. Authorities said that vehicle’s right front tire blew out and had been retreaded in violation of safety standards. Inspectors also looking at the vehicle’s mechanical systems.

It is a constant theme on this blog, but it just can’t be said often enough: How many of the injuries and deaths in this Mississippi bus crash detailed below, would have been avoided with airbags and seatbelts? If buses cost many times what a car does, why can’t they include all of the safety equipment a car has?

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Three people were killed and several injured Sunday when a casino bus carrying a group of tourists in northwestern Mississippi overturned on its way to the airport, officials said.

The bus belonged to Harrah’s Tunica and was carrying 43 people when it flipped over in a median at an intersection in Tunica, Tunica County spokesman Larry Liddell said.

Tourists on the bus were traveling to the airport for a flight to South Carolina, where many were from, officials said.

The bus was the only vehicle involved in the accident, which was still under investigation, Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Leslie White said.

The injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Memphis, Tenn., about 35 miles to the north.

Twenty-seven people were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital, spokesman Thomas Whitehead said. One was in critical condition and five were being held for observation. The rest had what Whitehead described as minor injuries.

Messages left at Regional Medical Center in Memphis were not immediately returned.

Harrah’s Entertainment operates 50 casinos worldwide, including three in Tunica: Harrah’s Tunica, Horseshoe Casino and the Sheraton Casino & Hotel. The area along the Mississippi River in the northwest corner of the state is best known for its bustling casinos.

“At this time, we’re focusing on the health and welfare of the guests involved in this tragic accident,” company officials said in a statement. The company set up a telephone hot line to give information and assistance to relatives of the crash victims.
